I am considering buying the DMR for my R8 but i seem to be reading about lots of problems and repairs. Would you reccommend it or not?

I have a DMR now working on my R8. I would say: the quality at ISO 100 is unbeatable. However, I experienced terrible noise problem when shooting at higher ISO (e.g. ISO 400 or 800) and even some unpredictable lines (I believe those are noise) appeared.

I don't know whether this is my DMR's own problem, since I already exchanged a new DMR with the local agent as my first DMR had produced a white line crossing every pictures even at ISO 100.

I love the dmr. I mainly shoot at ISO 100 and every now and then 400. I would buy because of the colors, dynamic range and the obvious use of leica glass.

Some noise problems are due to the RAW applications.

I also love my DMR. I have a few minor problems with the unit, but nothing at all serious.
I mainly shoot ISO 100, but have also shot 200 and 400.

I recently shot over 600 images at the World Figure Skating Championships ... all at ISO 400. I have not noticed any noise problems on any of the images.

I have definately decided against the DMR. Sounds like you guys are fooling yourself. You keep spending more and more money just to be competitive, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why not just buy a camera that performs well and not have to worry about aftermarket software to make my photos compete. I guess my R8 will just stay a film camera that works well at any film speed.

The DMR+R8/R9 is a wonderful camera and I would not change it against any other unit after having worked with Canon and Fuji DSLR. The noise issue is grossly exaggerated. If you apply the correct technique, i.e. unerexposing by approx. 3 EVs. and the "pushing" in RAW "development" you get excellent results up to ISO 800, ISO 1600 is admittedly not good.

The plus of the DMR as compared to other brands IMHO is mainly the wonderful color rendition. There is a good discussion about this on

I just compared a shot of mine to a similar shot from a DMR, mine shot with a Kodak, both of Tigers! At the same percentage mine is sharper and colors look better!

The landscapes are beautiful but if i wanted a camera just for landscapes i think i would stay with large format. I have an RB67 that has the most incredible saturation you've ever seen.

those indeed are very nice. the two cameras share a similar sensor.

i think the tiger s over sharppened and the tomatos in the foreground look odd. besides that they are great!

Jorge not knocking you or the DMR I just don't think the DMR is ready yet. I am a Leica lover! I've been shooting with my M3 since 1959 and some of the best photos i have ever taken are with it. I purchased the R8, and i love it i don't think you can beat the Leica glass and I was hoping to get the Digital back for it and i probably will but i think i'll wait a while and look to some future updates. Keep shooting!! All the Best, Patman

you should read the thread on FM regarding the DMR and people ditching 1ds2 for the dmr.
